I am an American considering retirement in Uruguay. Can anyone give me information on the seasonal coastal water temperature of the ocean? (In Fahrenheit if possible) I am wondering if it is warm enough to swim most of the year. I hate cold water and living in a place where I can go in the ocean is important to me. I’m guessing the water is fairly cold in the summer and warm in the winter. Am I right on this? Thanks!

I can't give you the temps... but I can say that it is *NOT* warm enough to swim year round!

The winter here (now) often gets to almost 32f... and is often in the 40f's. The last couple days have been an exception and we've had temps in the 70s and higher.

But that will be over in a couple days.

It is often windy here... and I don't think you'd want to go swimming on a windy 40f day, regardless of water temp.

The Summer/Winter seasons here are exactly opposite that of Pennsylvania. So you have summer now, we have winter, and the water is cold.

You probably need to get about as far North as Rio if not further for what you are looking for.

The really nice summer months here are Dec, Jan, Feb.. Though Oct-Apr aren't at all bad though I'm not sure they are all swimming months.

The summer season in Punta del Este is 3 months long at best. The high season is really just 2 months. It is a grand two months at that, but far too short.

fvansan, so what will be your decision? Why consider the temperature of the sea? So i guess you'll try a more tropical country? How about trying an Asian country?

Well, there is still time before I retire. My questions are part of my preparation activities. A world economy repair has to be considered at the time also.

I wanted to consider the ocean water temp as I won't swim in cold water and I want to have this as part of my retirement environment.

Uruguay remains so far at the top of my list and I will have to resolve the ocean temp somehow.

I'm not too fond of Asia for many reasons, like high crime, questionable food sources, the very hot and monsoon weather, affordable medical insurance, and natural disasters. I do think I have an open mind though.
