Is it possible to retire to Belize on a little over $1100/month USD?

Thank you

Larry

Of course it is possible. I think Belizeans do. The real question is whether YOU can live in $1100/mo... and that is difficult for us to answer as we don't know the lifestyle you are looking for.

I am living on that now, here in Mazatlan....Just had to adjust my lifestyle a little bit.

Can I rent an apartment or a house for around $600 a month? Are pets allowed? If I sell my car, can I get where I need to go on foot? I've been told that it is pretty inexpensive to live in Belize. Is that true? Is the medical and dental community good? So far, Belize is the place I have picked out to retire in. Did I make the right decision? Thank you.

why aren't there any respondents in this forum? Aren't there any retirees or expats living in Belize who can help us with our inquiries?

Belize seem like an ideal place to retire, no doubt. If you are thinking about doing this, it would be a great idea to spend some time there and get acquinted with persons who have done the same thing and sound them out, get their opinions. The view after a few months or years can be different than the one we had before. I am attaching a link that gives much info on the subject. Good luck.

Well, as someone has aptly put it, that will depend on the kind of lifestyle you are seeking to have. $ 1, 100 seems like modest but the best would be to visit Belize city for an overview of what staying there entails. Get all the specifics then you will be able to budget accordingly. That is if any sort of online searches do not yield fruit. The best people to hear from are those that have moved there recently. Good luck

Belize is lovely, but I am not sure if retiring there would be the bets option. There are very many other locations in all of the world in which one could easily retire and have a lot of fun doing such, while staying surrounded by beauty, as well as in the midst of peace and tranquility.

Comment #15 Eve (63.176.159.52) - 12/21/09 09:33

The Caribbean, though not the safest of all places, it surely is very much an incredible location in which many individuals can find themselves having the time of their lives. This would also, eventually, make it a very much easy choice, concerning retirement and what not.

Comment #16 brent (63.176.159.189) - 01/07/10 00:36

I would most certainly consider the Caribbean for much an endeavor. This would be in spite of the fact that there is worry of safety.

I think it ispretty obvious that you should have some pretty sum of amount at your disposal when deciding to move or retire t another country. Try reconsidering and earning more money then decide to move there. A $1100 is probably suffice to keep your lifestyle if that is how much you regularly own back in you hometown. Usually these retirement countries offer cheaper and better way of living other than most Western countries. Beware of some safety issues though.

"Living in Belize for $1100 a month"

The short answer is: YES you can do it. Belize is cheaper in some aspects of life and more expensive in others.

Belize has a Qualified Retired Persons program (QRP) whereby you can obtain a "permanent tourist" status. To qualify, you have to deposit USD$2000 per month into a Belizean bank account. Seeing as how that's much more than $1100, I'm guessing that's probably out of the question.

Different people are accustomed to different qualities of life, so USD$1100 is a lot for some and not nearly enough for others.

There are several articles on Paradise Hunter that cover moving to Belize (including some sample budgets; see "Utilities")

Start here, and good luck!

"Crazy Idea"

Month 1: Deposit US$2, 000.

Month 2: Deposit US$1, 100 + US$900 (you withdraw) from the account.

in order words, live on 1, 100 a month and carry the 900 forward by withdrawing and redepositing it.

The answer to the question if one can retire on Belize in such a limited budget as over a thousand dollars really depends on one's lifestyle. One may laugh at you for the fact that they know the cost of living which is a common monthly rent of over two thousand dollars, or get awestruck that you have that some of amount which is already too much for a simple lifestyle in the country. It is advisable to list down your usual lifestyle, if you're into sports, local and foreign travel, etc. This will help us assess if indeed your monthly income of $1100 is enough or not for a Belizean way of living.
