Retirement in Belize
Retirement, Ecuador

terry (152.163.100.196) -

I have heard that Ecuador is developing a program or system for non-citizens to retire there. Has anyone any knowledge of this? If so, where can I get more acurate current

information?

Hello,

We have a new website which is a free forum for Americans retiring abroad. We have a Ecuador Expat Forum, and we are also seeking information on Ecuador visa requirements for retirement. Please register at our board, and this information should become available.

Thanks,

Jeffrey

There are several catagories for foreign retirees moving to Ecuador. The simplest is the Investor Visa, which requires nothing more than the purchase of a $1400 (Yes, that's one thousand four hundred dollar) certificate of deposit in the central bank of ecuador (Banco Central de Ecuador). There's nothing more to it! Ecuadorian attorneys will offer to handle the paperwork for you for a thousand dollars or so, but you can easily complete and submit the paperwork yourself while residing in Ecuador. Go for it!

I am currently retired in Thailand and have been for three years and have a Thai wife. There are many visa restrictions here and the longest that you can get is one year. Makes you a bit uncomfortable. Life is good here but very hot.

It is hard to determine much from these boards as they are designed to get you to buy what they offer. I can and do rent a two bedroom two bath house here for $70. a month and it's nice. Is that possible there?

A track home here with very little land runs about $38,000 how about there?

Of course one of the things about Thailand is the entertainment, available there as well?

We do a lot bowling and motorcycle touring possible there?

I see things with an average tempature of 75 degrees true?

Beach house for 40K true?

Lastly, I have lived as an expat for three years now and I know adjustmetns will have to be made. How do you enjoy life there?

Ray.

Comment #8 Michael Manning (205.242.255.66) -

I am looking for some information on moving to Ecuador. I can run my internet business from there and feel it is a good option. What about the situation of crime? I am an American and have been to Guayaquil before and did not feel safe at all. There was a lot of crime. Visited last in 2001.

Comment #9 Joe from des plaines -

I think you kinda answered your own question about safety: "did not feel safe at all."

Another important question is internet access.

Have you considered other places? The Uruguay Forum seems to indicate that both safety and internet access are good.

Comment #10 Brent Stewart (209.115.232.65) -

Hello i am interested in moving to Equador i have heard it is nice there and the cost of living is relatively cheap.

Were can a person find information about moving and retiring in equador.

Thanks

Comment #11 david l. stewart from san angelo, Texas -

All the above questions can be answered in the above subject manual published by International Living. Go to International Living dot com

Comment #12 Joe from des plaines -

It is really better if you put the link in the box so everyone can just click on it.

They have some good information, but they also have a lot of hype to sell their stuff.

Your best bet is to ask SPECIFIC questions on forums so others can help you.

Comment #14 LarryM from Retiring in Ecuador -

Hi there,

Just wanted to introduce myself to the membership. My wife and I are anxiously anticipating our move to Ecuador in December 2007, as we purchased our condo in July 2007 and are looking forward to our move. It was completed for move-in in May 2007.

If anyone is looking for good, honest contacts for Real Estate in Cuenca, or on the Pacific Coast, north of Guayaquil, I will be happy to offer you some suggestions.

Comment #17 Dane from Plano, Texas -

Jerry, I think that David Morrill of International Living and Cuenca Realty could give you an honest accessment of safety in Cuenca. I am 52 years old live in Plano, Texas and last May of 2006 bought a condo in a highrise going up across from the Oro Verde for my wife and I to retire to in a few years. This first world structure with its worldclass amenitites appealed to us as we like the idea of living in this colonial city with its charm however being able to retreat to a first world secure residence.I studied potential retirement spots from Buenas Aires, to Punta de Este Uruquay to Vina del Mar Chile and decided on the quaint Cuenca Ecuador with its perfect climate, very affordable healthcare and extremely low cost of living. A 15 minute cab drive across town is $1.50.I checked in the emergency room for "stomach trouble" . I was being treated for 6 hours the bill was $112.The doctors spoke english and were very concerned about my well being.

Hello,

I am offering my oceanfront house for sale. It is 6, 600 sq ft with 8 BR's 6 1/2 Baths; 4 BR's have private Baths and overlook the ocean; while two pairs of Br's have a bathroom between each pair making it a nice arrangement for owners/guests. Currently I use it as a 'hosteria" and have guests tell me they love the place. It is located 8 kms. north of Montanita so one can enjoy the surfing and atmosphere of that well known area, but enjoy a little more relaxation and tranquility if they like. For more info, feel free to visit my website, eldelfinfelizdotcom which has some pictures and I can be emailed at eldelfinfeliz at gmaildotcom.

I am interested in talking with expats living in Cuenca.

I am looking for retirement information and plan to retire there in 3 years at age 70.

I have made one trip to Ecuador - Salinas, but I think Cuenca is a better choice.

My husband and I are looking to buy a beachfront home in Ecuador. We are in our late 50's from Oklahoma and are retired educators. I am a high school counselor and my husband is a special ed teacher. We would like to get all the info we can on life in Ecuador. Thanks, Donett

Comment #22 Marina from NY -

I am thinking about moving to Ecuador when my husband retired. He is going to be 61 this winter and wants to work for a few more years. I am very interested in communicationg with someone who already lives in Cuenca.

My husband is a college professor (math). I used to teach education in university, in Russia. Currently, I am a grad student in school psychology, but I think that I ready for my early "retirement" in Ecuador.

Please, contact us: mighelinger@yahoo.com or marinapop12@yandex.ru

Comment #23 Gary from Ecuador development Group, Cotacachi -

My wife and I settled in Cotacahci, Ecuador a year ago after traveling the world for 10 years. We got our residency visas in May, and made a deposit on a pre-construction condo two weeks ago. We are also selling the same condos.

Six months ago we formed a company called Ecuador Development Group--The EDG (cute, huh?) with a young American and his Ecuadorian wife, and an Ecuadorian couple who lived in the states for 30 years. They returned here to semi-retire two years ago. Martha worked at the Ecuadorian embassy in D.C. for 20 years.

We all love Ecuador. It is beautiful, peaceful, friendly and welcoming. As in all countries, there are areas that are unsafe. But where we live it is more like the 50s in the US, with kids playing safely in the streets at night and expats with no fear to walk anywhere at any time.

We will be answering questions on this board in the future. The primary purpose of our group is to help people like us make the move here easily and with minimum complexity. It is actually quite easy to do as Ecuadorian laws are very favorable towards expats.

Please check our site at www.pro-ecuador.com. It will answer lots of your questions.

Pleasant journeys.

Gary

Comment #24 Ashley from Florida, USA -

Hi we are planning on living there part time, maybe during the summers. We are planning several trips. I have been once for a month in 2001 before 9/11. I am married to a native from Ecuador. I watch Channel One here on cable and see some terrible crimes being commited. Can anyone who is living there tell me how travel is between Guayaquil airport and the Manabi province? Safety? How is the public bus safety? When we were there before, they were stopping cars with roadblocks in all parts of the country. Thanks.

Comment #25 Gary from Ecuador development Group, Cotacachi -

I can't give you information about safety around Guayaquil, but we have heard that is is not very safe.

We have traveled extensively by bus in North Ecuador, Quito, Santo Domingo, Atacames, Ibarra, Otavalo, Banos, Ambato, Cotacachi, etc. We have never had any problem, nor heard of any. In all our travels, the bus has only been stopped twice for passport checks.

Regarding residence visas, if you are retired and have a verifiable retirement income of $800 per month, plus $100 more for every dependent, you can get a resident visa. If not, you can make a $25, 000 CD deposit in a bank, or a $25, 000 real estate investment, plus $500 for each dependent.

Check our website at www.pro-ecuador.com. Click on retirement in Ecuador.

The visa holder must be in country for 9 months each year for the first two years.

Hi -- My husband and I are very interested in retiring in Ecuador in a couple of years. We've heard and read great things about the valleys such as Cumbaya, Tumbaco, Los Chillos. Cumbaya seems a bit expensive, what about Tumbaco? is it nice, clean, developed, how about shopping there? malls, cinemas, etc.

Any information will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ines

Comment #27 keith from cold&snowy connecticut -

what are the costs of owning a auto in ecuador? I would also like some more info on health ins costs.

Comment #28 lordlance from nowherelandia -

The living cost in Belize is about 50% cheaper than any other South American countries.

I saw in an auction that a car is being sold at the price of 2000-3000$, brand new and good quality.

Comment #29 Joe from des plaines -

Belize is in Central America. You cannot compare South America to Central America!

I think you'll find Central America to be more third world than South America.

Comment #30 lordlance from nowherelandia -

Me and my family are staying here in the Philippines since I was born 22 years ago. Its a good life we're living here but there are still lots of things that we don't like.

Our family originally come from Greece and my mother in Spain. For my old parents, who are already retired at the moment, I want to give them the life that they deserve even for the last days of their stay here on earth, I mean, accept it, we are all going to that next life.

So please enlighten me on where should let my parents retire, specially that theyre body are weak, I want them be placed on a house near the shore, preferably in the Caribbean. Idea anyone?

.Is Ecuador too good to be true? Several exploratory trips later, my husband and I are infatuated and when in Ecuador are in a state of Euphoria.

In our fifties, we have reached our limit with Wisconsin and the USA. Enough is enough! Instead of living in constant emotional disruption vis a vis everything! we have decided to high tail it out of there. Simple as ABC and head straight for the magic of Ecuador

We're considering moving to Cotacachi but many of the photos show the sky to be overcast and people wearing jackets or sweaters. Is that normally the case? Also, would high-speed internet and satellite TV be available if we were to renovate an old home near the town center? Any idea what an old colonial in need of repair would cost?

Comment #38 Matthew Carpenter from Quito, Ecuador - Wed Jul 23 22:52:44 2008

Hello,

I see lots of interest in retiring in Ecuador. I highly recommend it: I've met many expat retirees here who are living a great life and enjoying it too.

I am a Canadian living in Quito for two years now, and I am looking to rent the condo I recently bought to expats or foreigners who like to take good care of their living space.

You can find the description in the following craigslist ad or write me.

Please get in touch if you would like to view or see more photos.

Best of lucks in your search towards retirement!

Matthew

My wife and I are in our 60's and are considering buying a piece of land on the Esmeralda coast and developing it with 2 & 3 bedroom stand alone houses as well as 2 & 3 bedroom condos.

These will be for sale only to persons over 55 who wis to retire and live there permanently. It will be supported with our own farm for fresh vegetables, meat and bread etc., as well as a club house, swimming pool and tennis courts.

These will not be at the prices in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua etc., but will be very nice and of course the cost of living in Ecuador as you know is very reasonable.

If anybody is interested (ONLY SERIOUS ENQUIRIES PLEASE) and would like more information, please e-mail me at

lynhyl@mail.com
