| "Garifuna Music Research"
Hello. I'm a senior percussion music major at Tarleton State University in Texas, U.S. I'll be conducting research in Punta Gorda in mid-late March and am looking for some information regarding music venues/musicians/cheap housing/and possibly guides or informants to make my research experience in Belize a more efficient one. If you can help me or can refer me to someone who can, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time. -Justin Hawkins |
| I have heard a lot about these Grifuna drums. These are hand made and the materials are obtained from natural products in Belize and Guatemala. In Belize it is made up of mahogany wood. Its shape being straight on the top and smaller from the bottom.Shape is drawn with pencil and outside chipped with maschette. Wood is hollowed using fire, water and gauges. Then the drum is smoothed by sandpaper.Holes are burned to tighten the skin.To attach the skin to the drum the vines of the titay and natural ropes are used. Finally the snares are put on top of the drum. |
| When I go to places for a vacation, I see to it that I buy something to bring back home. And since I am to visit Belize I would want to buy that Garifuna drum and add up to my collection. If you can suggest the best place to where I can buy Garifuna drum then that would be a lot of help for me. Thanks a lot and good day to all. |
| I am a music lover and i really admire those people who have skills in making musical instruments like Garifuna Drum. I wish to visit Punta Gorda soon and meet someone who can produce a very nice Garifuna Drum. By the way, I would like to know if there is a particular season where in Garifuna Drum makers make numerous garifuna drums. Any posts will greatly be appreciated. Thank you. |
| "Not a Garifuna drum"
This guy on the corner of Church and Main Streets is a well-known crack dealer - he is more commonly called Tommy, and the drum he has made is NOT a Garifuna drum: Garifuna drums do NOT have a thin "waist" like this - they are essentially straight up and down, and the ropes are tied from the very bottom of the drum, not from the "waist" like this. The drum he has made is a Creole drum, which is completely different.Garifuna drums are MUCH bigger than this, and they ALL have wire or string across the skin to provide the distinctive buzz you hear in Garifuna drumming. There are a number of fantastic Garifuna drummers in Punta Gorda town. There is a young drummer called Ronald Raymond McDonald who lives in town and does Garifuna drumming lessons for locals and visitors, who lives on the corner of Cemetery Lane and Church Street, or can be contacted by phone on 632-7701. He also has his own traditional Garifuna group with men and women on drums, turtle shells, maracas and vocals. |
