spamghod from korea (Contact Member) -
I'm currently teaching ESL in Korea in a public middle school in the EPIK (English Program in Korea). I've been teaching ESL since 1994 and have an MS Ed in Curriculum Design. I'm interested in relocating to Belize in the next year or so. I'm having a difficult time finding ESL positions in Belize, even on Google. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Did you try going to some kind of career website and posting your resume and what your looking for and also your previous experiences. That should work and if not maybe ask someone at the current place where your teaching and they might be able to point you in the right direction.

What is ESL all about? If you are good at it, I am sure you won't have much trouble coming across career opportunities. Most of these jobs we apply for online might really seem attractive but at times it needs as to take that eztra step of following up on what we want; it kind of places you a notch higher than those that will sit back and wait to be contacted. All the same, all the best!

From what i can see of Belize it is pretty much English speaking apart from the south which is predominantly Spanish speaking. So i am presuming that th EFL work will be down there.I myself am planning on moving to Belize and have the full CELTA qualification.Any contacts would be very usefull!

To have been able to have remained in the teaching scene for a little over a decade serves to suggest that your experience is way above questionable limits. I agree that it could be tricky getting these jobs without any leads whatsoever. Being a majority English speaking country would work to your advantage provided you have a well-drafted eye catching resume. It is never too late to keep trying, isn't it?

Really competitive resumes in here. If the internet searches are not yielding mcuh, perhaps a blog specifically handling the needs of the expats to Belize will do much. From the look of things, teaching jobs in Belize are seasonal. ESL and TEFL jobs in particular are common but you need to know where to look.
As you indicated, the online job searches are not really helpful so a Belizan might be your best lead.

Those are great educational backgrounds and experience, i bet lots of companies out there will be interested on your resume, you just have to post it on the appropriate job listings or job hiring online.. This is the best way to go, ofcourse it is also a good idea posting in forums like this one. Some might recommend your post and you might got employed in no time. Best of luck..

"Teacher"
I retired in July and want to travel and teach part-time.I want to take the Green Tortoise down to Belize and teach for a few months. I'd like to work in a University, checking translations, for instance.
I taught EFL in Korea for a year in 2000, but apparently they are not hiring now because of the recession. Or...there is an oversupply of teachers.
Are there any American businesses down there that use temporary help?
Any other ideas to help me out?
Thanks so much!
Mary

I have no idea what is being spoken of when made mention of ESL and EFL and so forth. What do these terms actually mean?

I see that there is no one that is willing to assist me at this very moment in time, for one reason or the other.

Hi there Cidy, I hope this would helpThe main differences between EFL and ESL are the students and the location where English is being taught to speakers of other languages.
Starting with the basics, EFL stands for English as a Foreign Language and ESL stands for English as a Second Language. More inclusive ESL acronyms are ESOL and TESOL. ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
