Starting a small business in Belize

Thank author of this post/commentHi there im looking at moving out to Belize next year to open a small B&B/Guest house. Can anyone tell me how easy a process this is, will we have problems getting licenses/visas for this kind of business?

Any information will be great!

Thank author of this post/commentAside from any regulatory issues.. have you looked at the market.. prices... etc.

Are you opening a $15/night B&B or a $150/night B&B? Will the market support your target price? How many rooms? 5 rooms at $15/night isn't very much money for something that may take all your time!

5 rooms at $150/night might be a great revenue projection... but not if you have low occupancy.

The other issue to look at is the hidden costs of employees... social security, employment taxes, hidden "obligations" (Christmas pay, cost to "fire" an employee, insurance, theft, etc).

Thank author of this post/commentYes we have looked at that and we will open a combo of private rooms and dorm style for independent travellers. Im really looking for information on the licensing and visa process, I dont want to buy land and not get a work visa or license.

Shortie from UK did you try contacting someone over there like the better business bureau? Maybe they could help you out, and let you know what you need to get your business started over there, and also maybe try looking this information up on the internet. Good Luck and I hope your B&B gets up and running and is successful.

If your hoping to go to Belize to start a business you can visit www.global-travel.co.uk to help you out on getting travel papers and information. And when your finally there you can open business in Belize by following their rules and regulations with regards to their business licensing and establising.

Compared to the US, doing business in Belize is relatively easy, as long as you steer clear of some areas, and study the landscape pretty carefully before you plunge in.

The Government of Belize has a pretty good handle on moneymaking businesses as a source of tax revenue, of course and so you should steer clear of these if you want to avoid a lot of hassle. Here are some of the more obvious areas.

Health Care

Tourism

Education

Transportation

Will steering out of the named sectors really help? I think hassles are everywhere and it all depends on whether the target area is one you have chosen to. Nila, what are some of the problems in the four areas you have mentioned? Yeah, do your research and make sure you have sealed all loopholes. Remember doing business in a relatively new location will require quick adaptability.

Unless there is any imminent threat in plunging into certain sectors of the economy, I see no harm on trying the said areas of business. There are cases of expats being harassed by the authorities by the mere virtue of not fulfilling certain simple regulations.

It is important to exhaust everything concerning any laid down procedures, then when everything else is set, roll your business into operation. At that point, business etiquette will be all you will have to worry about.

It would be easier putting the web links in the correct boxes to avoid people having to type in the same address but that seems to be easier said than done.

I would still go to the website given above then once all travel requirements have been fulfilled, get to know more while in Belize. If you steer away from some areas, the sailing should be smooth.

All the best

You should use extreme caution in entering a new setting to set up a business. Take the advise I see on the forum and first go there and simply observe. meet people, ask questions. Get the "scene" as it were. THEN make up your mind. And donīt fotget to keep close to a good lawyer that knows you and your intentions. I mean an honest lawyer (I can hear the laughter"!), but there ARE some.

Best wishes...

Starting a small business in Belize: Iīve heard many good things about Belize and know very little myself about this great place. It appears to be a very "natural" place with beautiful rainforests, rivers and beaches. The population doesnīt seem to be spoiled as many other central and south american countries. The politicians still arenīt in total control. Opening a business in Belize seems to be ideal as a place to settle down, and shed the civilized crust we accumulate over the years. Something pure and simple. Right? Keep at it and let us know how you make out. Will come and visit some day.

I've learn a lot about Belize, thank to the article reviews about the country, on Destinations 360.

Google for TravelBelize.org, it also has some nice and sweet facts about this eco - paradise.

For me the best investment that could have the fastest ROI and growth in these country is those venture related to tourism such as beachfront properties - real estate, accommodation industry, travel and tours and retailing industry.

Thank author of this post/comment"all questions and no answers ...."

Has anyone here set up a business in Belize? I see a ton of questions but no real answers. I wanted to set up a business as well ... but I read some things that make it not cost effective ... business license $2, 500, laws that state no non-Belizean is allowed to work in Belize whether it's paid or not. ..... anyone know for sure?

Daniel

Anyone that wishes to set up a business in another country has to do it following the legal procedures, and the only way that a non-Belizean is not allowed to do any kind of work paid or unpaid is if this person enter the Country with a tourist visa, but if a foreigner wants to set up busines in Belize needs to get a work permit or a residence card, Belize is a beautiful and peaceful place, and is investors friendly. so, don't be afraid once you do everything right, everything will go smooth.
